The swampland and old-growth forest of South Carolina’s Congaree National Park, created by the overflowing floodplain of the Congaree and Wateree Rivers, is quite a unique habitat. Containing cypress, sycamore, oak, and white pine trees, including the tallest of 15 species of trees all supported by the swamp underneath, this national park is also the home to an amazing array of wildlife, including turtles, alligators, fish, frogs, snakes, otters, birds, and many reptiles.
After leaving Charleston, South Carolina, on our Summer 2020 RV Road Trip, our family drove an hour and a half north to visit Congaree National Park. We knew ahead of time that we would not spend too much time in this park, but enjoyed exploring this unique place while we were there. After a short stop at the Visitor Center, our family hiked the Boardwalk Trail for almost three miles, which led us above the swamps and through the old-growth trees of the park. It was a humid day, but we saw so many different insects and animals along our route! This was an incredible glimpse into the unique ecosystem of Congaree National Park.
