Utah’s Canyonlands National Park is found where the Colorado and Green Rivers converge, splitting the park into three distinct districts that are characterized by red, orange, and brown-colored rocks, cliffs, boulders, and spires. Most of this primitive park is classified as backcountry, sought after by backpackers, mountain bikers, hikers, river rafters, and those with four-wheel-drive vehicles. That being said, many opportunities abound for those looking to explore the park’s wonders safely.
Our family absolutely LOVED Canyonlands National Park, a stop after our visit to Bryce Canyon National Park on our Summer 2019 RV Road Trip. What a surprise this park was for us! None of us had ever been, and Justin and I continually remarked that if we had not known better, we could have easily been convinced that we were actually staring at the Grand Canyon!
Our day began early, departing our RV park, the Moab Valley RV Resort and Campground, and heading to the Visitor Center first thing that morning. Our first stop was Mesa Arch, and the kids were TROOPERS, hiking the entire way without complaint. The arch was gorgeous, and the views of the canyons below impeccable.

Following our hike to Mesa Arch, we headed to the Grand View Overlook Hike, which we were a bit apprehensive about due to some reviews about the heights. After assessing the route, we decided to go for it after a safety talk with the kids. Our kids are not typically wild on the trails, and have good self-control, so we knew that they would be safe on the route. What a gorgeous hike! Start to finish, this hike was amazing, with views of the Canyons and the Colorado and Green Rivers on both sides. The kids scrambled up some rocks, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch with a spectacular view at the endpoint of the trail.
The kids really outdid themselves with their explanations of this amazing geologic wonder.
After we finished our hike, we stopped at Schafer Overlook, and Justin and I really enjoyed the views there as well.
We continued on our way that afternoon, and enjoyed our final stop at Dead Horse State Park, which we had read about prior to our trip. From the overlook at the end of this journey, we enjoyed the best view of Canyonlands of the entire day. As always, photos just do not do these views justice, but they surely took our breath away.
We wrapped up our evening with some time at the RV park pool, a welcome respite after a lot of hiking in the hot, hot sun. Our family had truly had a wonderful day in Canyonlands National Park!
