Glacier and Mount Revelstoke National Parks, British Columbia, Canada

Exploring National Park Gems in British Columbia

After our stop in Jasper National Park on our Summer 2019 Road Trip, our family continued on our journey across Canada, traveling to Glacier National Park, not to be confused with the United States’ Glacier National Park in Montana, which we had visited earlier that Summer.

Along our drive from Jasper, we spotted several amazing glaciers, and we stopped at the visitor center first thing to learn more about this park. From there, we headed out on a hike to the Bottom River Loop, which ran along the old Canadian Pacific Railway. The boys loved spotting the uprights from the old railroad track along the way, and looking for the tracks buried in the dirt below the hiking trail.

After our visit to Glacier National Park, our family continued on our drive west, arriving at our next destination, Mount Revelstoke National Park. Our first agenda upon arriving in the park was to hike a trail called the “Trail of the Cedars,” which wound through a grove of 500 year old cedars. We are likely spoiled by the giant sequoias and redwoods in California, as the “wow” factor just was not there for us on that hike. That being said, it was a gorgeous walk through a beautiful old-growth forest.

After our hike, we made our way to our campground at Williamson’s Lake, called the Williamson Lake Campground, located in the town of Revelstoke. This campground was right on the lake, and proved to be an amazing spot for us during our stay in Revelstoke. The boys insisted on jumping in the lake immediately, and I enjoyed some peaceful moments lakeside watching them play.

The next morning, our family headed to a hike in Revelstoke named “Nel’s Knickers.” This hike climbed the hill of an old ski jump where Nels Nelson set a world record many years before. It was a STEEP hike, but the views from the top were incredible, and the boys loved pretending they were world-class ski jumpers! We hiked along another nearby trail nearby afterwards, and even picked and ate some wild blueberries!

That afternoon, after checking out the Revelstoke National Park Visitor Center, we relaxed by the lake, swam, played ball and at the park, and enjoyed a couple rounds of mini golf. It was a great evening together at one of our favorite campgrounds! All-around, Mount Revelstoke was a wonderful stop on our journey across Canada!
