Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada

Exploring Waterton With Kids

During our Summer 2019 RV Road Trip, our family was elated to finally make the jump across the United States border and into Canada, exploring this country for the first time together. Our first destination on the Canada leg of our journey was Waterton Lakes National Park, which was located about an hour and a half from Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. The kids were thrilled to cross the international border for the first time.

We arrived in Waterton Lakes, and our first destination was the visitor center in town, where we planned to get some information about the park. Upon realizing that there was a Catholic Church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, literally right next door, and seeing on the sign that they would be holding Mass just thirty minutes later, we took advantage of serendipity. Our family attended a beautiful Mass together (the kids were hilarious asking us if there was anything different we needed to do at Mass since we were in a different country) before checking into our campground seated right on the edge of Lower Waterton Lake. We would all highly recommend the Townsite Campground for its amazing location.

What a SPOT!

With the kids’ legs still sore from our long hike the day before, we opted for a bike ride to explore the park, and rode through town, and along the lake. The sweet little resort town of Waterton is quaint and charming, and has a variety of restaurants and shops that are a great destination for any family. We also visited the historic Prince of Wales Hotel, a historic hotel perched on a hill overlooking the lake. The views from the hotel grounds were absolutely BREATHTAKING.

After spending some time in downtown Waterton on our way down, we opted to play at the Lake that afternoon, a two-minute walk from our campsite. The kids had a great time skipping rocks, wading in the water, and playing together. The warm sun and small respite gave us all a chance to catch our breath. Waterton Lakes was a welcome and wonderful first stop for our family in Canada.
