Our First RV Breakdown: Kanab, Utah

Surviving an early breakdown on our Summer 2019 Road Trip

It had been a great first three days on the road during our first summer-long RV Trip, in the Summer of 2019. However, when driving from Las Vegas, Nevada to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, we had pulled over after about three and a half hours on the road to check out a roadside scenic viewpoint. Upon returning to our RV, we could see that the front grill was smoking, and seemed to be dripping liquid. THIS WAS NOT A GOOD SIGN. Here we were in the middle of nowhere, 3 days into a 60-day trip, and we could tell that the RV was having a major situation.

This was NOT good.

After several calls to roadside assistance, we were finally able to connect with a service able to offer towing capability for a vehicle our size. After waiting a few hours on the side of the road, where we proceeded to have dinner on a camping blanket and throw the softball around for a while, we were en route to Kanab, Utah, where we would hopefully be able to have the RV assessed the next morning.  After scoring a spot for our overnight at the Kanab RV Corral RV Park, we hit the sack that Father’s Day evening with no guarantees about what the next day, or days, would hold.

Thankfully, the next morning, after a quick and early stop at the service center, they were able to determine that our coolant tank had likely blown its cap (probably on our ascent toward the Grand Canyon in hot summer temps), which had caused the coolant to drain and evaporate (hence, the smoking and fluid we had seen the day before). After receiving a quick cap replacement,, we were able to get back on the road, delaying our arrival in the Grand Canyon by only a day. We were so grateful for a quick turnaround.

NEVER a dull moment on the road!
