We get this question a LOT. “How do you guys possibly keep your kids entertained when you are on the road so much, for so long?”
The answer? It’s complicated, but not impossible.
First, let’s discuss technology. When approaching our first RV Road Trip, I was adamant that technology would NOT be a part of our journey. This was our family’s chance to immerse in nature, enjoy each other’s company, and make our own fun. Annnnnnd, that did work for us on that first trip, BUT that trip was only a week long in duration. Let me tell you – it’s a whole different ball game when you are on the road for months at a time or even an entire Summer, frequently driving 10-15 hours IN A DAY!
Let’s talk technology and devices first. While I am always on the hunt for things to do in the RV that do not involve technology, and you will hopefully find some helpful ideas below, Justin and I are absolutely okay with our kids using technology, within reason, especially on long drive days. While there are obviously many options out there in terms of what devices might best fit your needs, we have found that that most flexible option is a basic smartphone for each of our kids. Justin and I actually had several old phones that are without SIM cards, and we like how they can be used with more functionality than a music player, but not as an actual phone. They are lightweight, and versatile. We keep these devices in a safe in our RV, and only get them out when we have agreed upon the usage for them on a particular drive. Our kids are able to watch a movie on them, play a game, or listen to music, and these activities often really help break up what can be particularly monotonous driving days. Let’s be honest – there’s only so much scenery that kids can take!
With kids ranging in age from 7 to 13, we have compiled a list of our 10 Favorite Road Trip Activities for children.
2. AUDIO BOOKS – Download some family-appropriate books ahead of your trip to enjoy along the road. We really like the app, Audible, for downloading books, and also use the Libby app, which accesses audiobooks through our public library. Justin and I have also listened to several adult books together, or separately, using our AirPods. If anyone in your family can tolerate reading while driving without getting carsick (two of my kids can), regular books or books on Kindle are also fabulous ways to pass the time on long driving days.

4. TRAVEL GAMES – You can find HUNDREDS of ideas for travel games on Pinterest, or by a simple Google search, but these are some of our family favorites.
5. BOARD GAMES – If you are traveling in an RV, make use out of that table with several fun games. Many of these games are also available in a “travel version,” which are optimal for road trips. Our family favorite games include…
6. OTHER GAMES / ACTIVITIES – These are also great ways to pass the time on a road trip.

7. ARTS & CRAFTS – You can never go wrong with bringing markers and crayons, as well as a huge ream of drawing paper or sketch pads in the car or RV. It’s truly amazing what the kids will come up with to do with these supplies. In addition, stock the RV with some fun craft kits to pull out when you need to mix it up, or fun workbooks/activity books.
