A Visit to Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, South Dakota

Family Fun abounds in South Dakota

During our Summer 2019 RV Road Trip, Mount Rushmore quickly earned a spot as a “Gagnon Family Favorite.” This stunning ode to four of the United States Presidents – Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt – is a “must see” for any American. This monument, featuring 60-foot tall faces carved into the mountainside, is a remarkable ode to American patriotism and a wonderful commemoration of American history and progress.

Mount Rushmore, another GAGNON FAMILY FAVORITE!

During our family’s visit to the Black Hills area of South Dakota, where Mount Rushmore is located, we were able to explore the Monument twice, once at night, and once during the day, and it was incredible to see it in all it’s glory both times.

Our first visit to Mount Rushmore was in the evening, after rolling into the Black Hills from Badlands. We pulled up with about 45 minutes to spare before the evening lighting ceremony, and whipped up some roadside tacos before heading into the Monument. Justin, of course, made sure to bring two different kinds of hot sauce out to the curb to flavor his meal.

The Monument was gorgeous in the early evening, and the lighting ceremony was really unique. They included a special, patriotic reading about each of the four presidents, a sung performance of the Star-Spangled Banner, and a flag-folding ceremony, all before the final lighting of the Monument. It was more difficult to see all the details of the carving once it was lit, but seeing it lit up against a dark sky was a sight none of us would soon forget.

The next morning, after a stay overnight in the Black Hills, we returned to Mount Rushmore. The kids completed their Junior Ranger requirements, including drawing a picture of the Monument

Our family also walked the Presidential Trail, which brought us up closer to the Monument itself. It was a wonderful vantage point to see many of the details of the mountain up close, so be sure not to miss it.

Then, we visited the Sculptor’s Studio, where we listened to a step-by-step account of how the Monument was created and constructed. I really, really enjoyed that presentation, and I know Justin did as well. Looking at the actual model created as a guide for the build, we thought it apropos that our four children were standing just below the four Presidents depicted.

Of course, before leaving, the kids had to critique the carving of this iconic landmark.

After visiting Mount Rushmore, our family took advantage of some good downtime in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, which really added a unique dimension to our visit. We had a blast riding an alpine coaster, which had us speeding insanely fast down a mountainside on a metal track. It was such a thrilling way to spend time together, and gave us all a break from walking and hiking. The kids also completed a ropes course, and were able to challenge themselves and tackle their fears of heights. The Black Hills has many incredible opportunities for adventure and family fun, so make sure to take advantage of these opportunities during your stay.

Don't forget to explore MOUNT RUSHMORE AND THE BLACK HILLS on your next trip to South Dakota!
