The CamelBak Mini: A Hydration Home Run

The perfect solution for keeping young adventurers hydrated

Many people often ask us how we manage hydration on our hikes in the national parks. This summer, as our family explored the Southwest, hydration was absolutely one of our most important priorities, and one where we had to plan ahead constantly to ensure that we were all safe, and comfortable. Hiking in 110 degree weather in Saguaro National Park in Tucson wasn’t the most enjoyable experience!

On our adventures, each of us carries a CamelBak. These hydration packs come in many sizes, and we really like the CamelBak Mini for our two smallest hikers. These two children, who shall remain nameless, are also the most “touchy” about hiking in general, so we know that strapping too much weight to their backs would only make it worse (for all of us!). The CamelBak Mini is awesome since it’s compact, and yet still packs 50 ounces of water in a removable udder. The mesh back panel breathes really easily in hot temperatures, and there are two small zippered pockets for kids to bring along a few things besides their water if they so wish, and are even big enough to stash an extra layer of clothing.

One of my favorite things about the CamelBak Mini is the fact that it can be a welcome distraction from the rigors of hiking with my two “weakest links.” Half of the time they’re distracted as they sip water from the nozzle (which can be quite the novelty for young kids in general), and half of the time they are busy blowing the safety whistle on the sternum strap.

For all these reasons, the CamelBak Mini is a hydration home run for our family!
