Top 10 Family Favorite Campground Activities

How to make your time at the campground even more fun

In our family, we know that getting to each campground on our travel journey can be difficult enough (link to mishaps), but what do you actually DO once you arrive at your campground? We get this question often from friends and family often. Along our many adventures, we have made so many memories at camp, sometimes even more memorable than some of the more “noteworthy” things we have done.

Make incredible MEMORIES for your whole family!

Here is a list of our Top 10 Family Favorite Campground Activities.

  1. GET OUTSIDE – Especially after a long day of driving, getting outside is key. Our favorite thing to do at the campsite is to explore and engage with nature. Let your kids roam, take in the smells of the outdoors, explore the campground, and enjoy the beauty immediately around you out your door.  After all, this is one of the biggest benefits of living the RV and Camping life. Bikes and scooters can also be a great way to explore the area.

2. OUTDOOR OR INDOOR GAMES – We always bring several types of outdoor and indoor games with us in our RV when we travel.  Our favorites include.

  • OUTDOOR GAMES / ACTIVITIES: Balls (soccer, tennis, baseball/softball, football), TrackBall, Frisbee, Geocaching, Stargazing
  • INDOOR GAMES: Yahtzee, PIT, UNO, Rumikub, Pictopia, Checkers, Backgammon, Scrabble, Chutes and Ladders, Spot It

3. READING – Books are definitely a family favorite activity for enjoying the campground and campsite. Make sure to bring along a cozy camping chair.

4. FIRE – Enjoying a fire makes for a cozy way to enjoy the night, and also stay warm. We love building a bonfire in our SoloStove, which we bring along on all of our RV Trips. We typically buy wood at each campground, but we definitely have fun foraging for kindling. Our family also enjoys roasting s’mores over the campfire, and even coming up with new combinations beyond the traditional marshmallow/chocolate/graham cracker combination.

5. BBQ-ing – Our family really enjoys BBQ-ing dinner at the campground. We love our Weber Q1000, and grilling a great way to spend time outdoors in the evening together.

6. ENJOY CAMPGROUND AMENITIES – Many campgrounds have amenities that the whole family will enjoy. Along our trips, we have stayed at locations that have a pool, playground, miniature golf, shuffleboard, pickleball, tennis, water rentals, and even many social and kids activities. Make sure to take advantage of these amenities during your stay.

7. PUZZLES or ACTIVITY BOOKS – Bring some puzzles along in your RV, in addition to some activity books, or encourage your kids to use their time at the campground to complete their NPS Junior Ranger Books. If you are puzzling, consider purchasing a puzzle board, which allows you to store your puzzle while it is in progress.

8. ART / CRAFTS – Don’t forget to bring along a ream of drawing paper or a sketchpad, and an assortment of markers and crayons. These supplies will be the basis of many creative pursuits along your journey.

9. MOVIE NIGHT – One of our family’s favorite things to do at the campground is to have either an outdoor or indoor family movie night. Especially on days when we’ve hiked extreme distances, this is a great way to snuggle up and relax together. We also really like to combine the movie with the fire pit for a great outdoor experience.

10. SCAVENGER HUNT or HIDE AND SEEK – You can put together a quick and easy scavenger hunt for your kids at the campground, and this is sure to keep them busy for a while. Take it up a notch and give them your phone, for a “selfie scavenger hunt,” where they’ll need to take a “selfie” of themselves with each item. In addition, games like hide and seek will also get everyone outdoors together.

FUN-FILLED family time together!
